For the ham that wants the ultimate 4:1 current balun, this new dual core design fills the void! This is a balun originally designed by Guanella and subsequently improved by Dr. Jerry Sevick (W2FMI). By utilizing Thermaleze wire inserted in teflon tubes, Dr. Sevick was able to substantially increase the breakdown voltage between both conductors and windings while improving the overall input impedance. Building the balun with two separately wound cores (one for each conductor) greatly increases the inductive reactance.

This is a current balun that will handle 5kw from 1mhz to 54mhz. The separate toroids greatly reduce the chance of core saturation at high power. The dual cores also provide excellent choking impedance. Consequently, this balun is a good choice if you have RFI problems or RF in your shack due to imbalanced ladder line. Just mount the balun remotely, feed the ladder line to the studs and then run a short length of coax to your tuner or transceiver.

Note: The model 4115z is built to match the mounting requirements of ZeroFive verticals.

Design Features:

  • Special mix toroids with low permeability provides broadband coverage. Toroids are coated with epoxy paint for extra durablity.

  • The design has excellent low frequency response and is very efficient (99%). Input impedance remains essentially flat across this frequency spectrum.

  • SO-239 connectors are silver plated with teflon insulation - gold plated center conductor.

  • Bifilar windings on two separate toroids of 14 gauge Thermaleze wire. This is NOT the enameled type (Formvar) used by many less expensive competitors. It is coated with a polyimide covering rated at a minimum of 2000v breakdown voltage. The windings are then inserted into teflon tubes which increases the total breakdown to 10,000 volts.

  • Insertion loss is < 0.1db

  • All hardware is Stainless Steel. Eyebolts and studs are 1/4"

  • N & DIN connectors , alternate mounts and Top Eyebolt for hanging support are available in the accessories section.
  •

  • The balun is installed in a weatherproof 4" X 4" X 2" NEMA Box which makes an excellent outdoor enclosure.

  • This balun will handle continuous power and tolerate high SWR for extended periods.

It will not heat up at rated power, using extended duty cycles or stressing load conditions.
